have recognised that the future of safe and economic deep excavation
lies in the use of an adaptable and efficient trench shoring system.
Safety regulations dictate that any excavation
over 1.5 metres in depth must either have the walls of the
excavation benched or battered back to a safe slope. Alternatively

trench shielding must be used. Often this does not happen which
puts workers at risk of injury or death and employers at risk of
prosecution and substantial costs. The Principal is also exposed to
risk if reasonable efforts have not been made to ensure that the
work is carried out safely under the direction of the Contract
Engineer.

wall is not possible due to limited space or the substantial
reinstatement costs as would be encountered in a busy street.
Trench shields may be effective in protecting the occupants in the
trench but in most cases do not actively support the trench walls
leading to additional reinstatement costs and possible disruption to
nearby services.
